16.1 Actions that people and things are doing

In Lesson 11, we studied the primary verb am, is and are. In this lesson, we use them as helping verbs with other action words or verbs to form the present continuous time.

When we see rain falling from the sky, we say: It is raining. We use ‘is‘ before the verb ‘rain’. Without the helping verb ‘is’, we cannot add ‘ing’ to the verb ‘rain’. We use two words to make the verb in the present continuous time.

The action of raining is taking place at the present time and it is still raining at the time of speaking. The action of raining is temporary, so we use the present continuous time to talk about it. Here are some examples of temporary actions:

Present continuous time

now, at the time of speaking

Simple present time

all the time, or sometimes

I am reading. I read every day.
You are using my laptop. Why don’t you use your own?
We are playing a game. We play games every day.
They are arguing. They argue all the time.
He is cooking. He cooks every day.
She is making tea. She makes tea every morning.
It is raining. It rains every day.
