13.1 Primary verb: do

Do is another important primary verb. It can work by itself as a main verb. Do becomes does when it is used for a 3rd person singular in the simple present time. Here are some examples:

1 I do my work carefully.
2 We do our work in the afternoon.
3 You do your work well.
4 They do their work quietly.
5 He does his painting with brushes.
6 She does her work neatly.

We use do as a helping verb to ask questions in the simple present time. For a 3rd person singular, do becomes does. Read the statements on the left. When we use does for a 3rd personal singular, the verb returns to its base form.
